Hungarian Guest Investor Permit for the Family: Spouse, Children and Parents

Most of my clients do not move alone, so the family part is where I spend the most time. The good news with Hungary is that the investment does not grow with each relative. The catch is that relatives do not get the same permit as you. Checked on 26 October 2026 against the OIF FAQ and BRIDGES.
How the family is included
The investor gets the guest investor residence permit. Family members apply for a residence permit for the purpose of family reunification, with the investor as sponsor. OIF says they may file at the same time as the investor, but they cannot receive the permit until the investor’s own permit is granted.
Who counts as family
OIF does not list the family on the guest investor pages I checked. BRIDGES lists:
| Relative | Condition, according to BRIDGES |
|---|---|
| Spouse | registered marriage |
| Children under 18 | including children from a previous marriage, with the other parent’s consent |
| Adult children | only if they cannot support themselves because of their health |
| Parents of the investor and of the spouse | dependent on the investor |
Take this table as BRIDGES data. Before filing I always check the current family reunification rules for each person.
A trap for visa-required relatives
The OIF FAQ says that family members who need a visa to enter Hungary cannot file the family reunification application from inside Hungary. In practice this means they apply through a consulate. Plan their documents early, because they may not be able to simply travel with you and file on arrival.
What family members may do
Family reunification permit holders may work in Hungary, OIF says. Children can attend school. The permit follows the investor’s: if the investor loses the status, the relatives’ permits are affected too.

Timing and costs
BRIDGES writes that a family reunification decision takes up to 70 days. I did not find this figure on the OIF pages I checked. Each relative has their own permit fee (HUF 26,000 online in the OIF general fee list), translations and documents such as marriage and birth certificates. Foreign documents not in English need a certified Hungarian translation.
Documents I prepare for each relative
- valid passport and photo;
- marriage certificate or birth certificate, legalised or apostilled where required, with certified translation;
- consent of the other parent for a child from a previous marriage;
- proof of dependence for parents and for adult children with health reasons;
- proof of accommodation in Hungary.
For the main procedure see the application guide.
Questions and answers
Does my family need a separate investment?
No, according to BRIDGES. The investment stays EUR 250,000, and relatives apply for family reunification residence permits.
Can the family apply at the same time as me?
Yes, they may file at the same time, but OIF says they are not entitled to the permit until the investor receives theirs.
Can my spouse work?
Yes. OIF says family reunification permit holders may also work.
Which children qualify?
BRIDGES lists children under 18, including children from previous marriages with the other parent's consent. Adult children qualify only if they cannot support themselves for health reasons.
